Bosch Ariston GL2.5 Water Heater

There’s just something about washing your hands in warm water.

In most houses, because the sink is not right next to the water heater, there is a delay between when you first turn on the hot water and when hot water actually comes out of the faucet.  One of our staff had a house with a remodel and old plumbing and it actually took almost 3 minutes for the water to turn warm!  Most houses average 30 seconds to a few minutes.

When waiting for warm water, it’s tempting to not wait and just wash your hands in the cold water and be done with it.  You get used to washing your hands in cold water and you just put up with it.  Well it doesn’t have to be that way.

This week’s product of the week is the Bosch Ariston GL2.5 under counter water heater.  It’s a mini hot water tank that goes right under your sink.  It makes hot water available instantly.

We found installation to be very easy.  The unit can sit on the floor, so there is no need to drill holes or mount it (it can also be mounted on the wall if desired).  The water installation is as simple as unplugging the supply line between the hot water outlet and the sink, and plugging that into the water heater’s IN port, and then running a new line from the water heater’s OUT port to the sink.  You will need an extra supply line that fits your sink.  (we carry supply lines here.)  Both of the connectors in the unit are 1/2″ NPT male.

Installation does not require any mounting

The electrical installation is slightly more complicated but not too bad.  The unit plugs into a regular 120V outlet.  The challenge is the only outlet that most homes have under the sink is a switched outlet for the garbage disposal — and that outlet is generally left off.  We often found it convenient to tap a new unswitched outlet off the junction box that is located under most diswashers.  If you are installing in a bathroom or other location with no outlet, you may need to install a new one.  The heater is rated at 1500 watts, which means it will draw 12.5 amps.  You’ll need to be sure your circuit has the extra capacity when other appliances are on.  We didn’t have a problem, but you’ll definitely want to check for your own situation.

The unit has a thermostat, so you can select the exact temperature you wish.  It also has an on/off switch so you can save energy when going on vacation.

We don’t have hard figures – but we think we’re saving energy, and definitely water, by not drawing so much water out of the hot water tank on each use.

It’s hard to describe just how big a difference it makes to have hot water instantly available.  Since we installed it, nearly everyone who uses that sink comments on how nice the water is.  Think of how many times you wash your hands every day.
